The D Major chord is constructed using the formula of Root (R), Major 3rd (3), and Perfect 5th (5), sourced from the D Major scale. This scale includes the notes D, E, F#, G, A, B, and C#. For the D Major chord, the relevant notes are:

  • D (Root): This is the fundamental note of the chord, giving it its name.
  • F# (Major 3rd): Located four semitones above the Root, this note provides the major sound characteristic of the chord.
  • A (Perfect 5th): Seven semitones above the Root, this note adds stability and reinforces the chord’s harmonic foundation.

Fingering Technique:

Left Hand Fingering

Positioning your fingers correctly and ensuring they do not mute adjacent strings are crucial for producing a clear chord. Here’s how to position your fingers for the D Major chord:

  1. First Finger (Index): Place it on the second fret of the G string, fretting the A note, which is the Perfect 5th of the chord.
  2. Second Finger (Middle): Position it on the second fret of the high E string, fretting the F# note, the Major 3rd of the chord.
  3. Third Finger (Ring): Place it on the third fret of the B string, fretting the D note, which is the Root.

Strumming:

Strum from the D string. Remember as always – fingers on tip toes

Why not practice D Minor as well?

Never a bad idea to practice changing between a Major and Minor chord with the same root note! Here they both are – practice swapping between them.
