Am, Dm and Em – Learn them and switch!

Welcome to this exercise focusing on the Am (A minor), Dm (D minor), and Em (E minor) chords. These chords are part of the A minor scale and are often found together in many songs. This lesson and exercise combinationwill help you strengthen your chord transitions, improve rhythm, and develop a sense of timing, all while practicing with a metronome.

Part 1: Recap โ€“ How to Play the Chords

A Minor (Am)

Open A Minor Chord
  • Index finger: Place on the 1st fret of the B string (2nd string from the bottom).
  • Middle finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the D string (4th string from the bottom).
  • Ring finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the G string (3rd string from the bottom).

Make sure to strum from the 5th string down (do not play the 6th string).

D Minor (Dm)

Open D Minor Chord
  • Index finger: Place on the 1st fret of the high E string (1st string).
  • Middle finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the G string (3rd string).
  • Ring finger: Place on the 3rd fret of the B string (2nd string).

Strum from the 4th string down (avoid playing the 5th and 6th strings).

E Minor (Em)

Open E Minor Chord
  • Middle finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the A string (5th string).
  • Ring finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the D string (4th string).

Strum all six strings.


Part 2: Playing with a Metronome โ€“ Am, Dm, Em Chord Progression

In this exercise, weโ€™ll practice switching between the Am, Dm, and Em chords in a loop. Using a metronome will help you stay in time and develop consistency.
