Lesson: A, D, and E Chord Exercise for Beginners

In this lesson and exercise combo, weโ€™ll focus on three essential major chords: A major (A), D major (D), and E major (E). These chords are common in many songs and will help you develop your playing technique. You’ll also practice chord transitions using a metronome to build up your timing and rhythm.

Part 1: Recap โ€“ How to Play the Chords

A Major (A)

Open A Major Chord Diagram
  • Index finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the D string (4th string).
  • Middle finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the G string (3rd string).
  • Ring finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the B string (2nd string).

Strum from the 5th string down (do not play the 6th string).

D Major (D)

D Major Open Chord
  • Index finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the G string (3rd string).
  • Middle finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the high E string (1st string).
  • Ring finger: Place on the 3rd fret of the B string (2nd string).

Strum from the 4th string down (avoid playing the 5th and 6th strings).

E Major (E)

Open E Major Chord
  • Index finger: Place on the 1st fret of the G string (3rd string).
  • Middle finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the A string (5th string).
  • Ring finger: Place on the 2nd fret of the D string (4th string).

Strum all six strings.


Part 2: Playing with a Metronome โ€“ A, D, E Chord Progression

We will practice transitioning between the A, D, and E chords using a metronome. This exercise is designed to develop your sense of rhythm and improve your chord changes.
